Pongal is the main festival of Tamil Nadu, it is the traditional harvest festival celebrated all over India, primarily to give thanks to nature for a bountiful harvest, It usually falls in mid-January and marks the beginning of the Tamil month Thai, Pongal is celebrated to express gratitude to the Sun God (Surya), rain, and farm animals, which play crucial roles in agriculture. Farmers thank these natural elements for helping them cultivate their crops successfully. The festival signifies the celebration of harvest and end of winter, farmers used to celebrate their hard work by preparing special meals and sharing them with family and community members.

During Pongal, people eat sweet and savory rice dishes, lentil fritters, and various curries, centered around the namesake "Pongal," a dish of rice cooked with lentils and milk/jaggery, symbolizing abundance; popular items include sweet Sakkarai Pongal, savory Ven Pongal, crispy Medu Vada, aromatic Sambar, and creamy Payasam, often served in a festive spread. 

Key Activities by Day:

  1. Bhogi Pongal (Day 1): Home cleaning, discarding old items for a fresh start, and honoring Lord Indra.
  2. Surya Pongal (Day 2): Boiling rice and milk until it overflows (symbolizing prosperity), offering prayers to the Sun God (Surya) at sunrise, and decorating floors with kolams (rice flour designs).
  3. Mattu Pongal (Day 3): Honoring cattle (Mattu), who are decorated with paint, bells, and garlands; often involves agricultural games like Jallikattu in some regions.
  4. Kaanum Pongal (Day 4): Family reunions, visiting relatives, seeking blessings from elders, and community gatherings.
